OOH LA LA FRENCH ONION SOUP
The custom in France of enhancing every other thing with cheese gave us French Onion heaven. Wildfire (1300 Patriot Blvd., Glenview) combines Swiss and asiago cheese in their Baked French Onion Soup. If you want to go full traditional, Jameson’s Charhouse (9525 N. Skokie Blvd., Skokie) tops theirs with melted Gruyere cheese in a crock. Then Guildhall Restaurant (694 Vernon Ave., Glencoe) goes all out with an insanely delectable French Onione Foundue: caramelized sweet onions, brandy, and gruyere cheese fired in a wood oven and served with fresh herbs and toasted Publican Quality Bread. Onions, veal broth, toasted crouton, parmigiano reggiano, gruyere, and crispy onions comprise Convito Cafe & Market's (1515 Sheridan Rd., Wilmette) delectable French Onion soup which will fill you up with warmth and flavor.

CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL
The baseline for a curative soup is always going to be a chicken broth situation. The array of options for the classics at Kaufman’s Bagel & Delicatessen (4905 Dempster St., Skokie) includes homemade Chicken Soup alongside other faves like Matzoh Ball and Mish Mosh (with a matzo ball, a kreplach, noodles, and rice, it’s the kitchen sink of Jewish soup). Max and Benny's (461 Waukegan Rd, Northbrook) also serves up these delights, and make sure to grab some of their bagel chips, Ruggelach, and NY Black and White cookies on your way out. Guanajuato (73 Green Bay Rd., Glencoe) serves up a savory, authentic Tortilla Soup, a satisfying Mexican staple with avocado, sour cream, cheese, and tortilla strips. NaKorn Kitchen’s (1622 Orrington Ave., Evanston) Harrison Farm Chicken and Noodle Soup introduces Asian flair with thin rice noodles, carrots, bean sprouts, roasted crushed peanuts, cilantro, Thai chili flakes, and garlic oil. For a bright twist on the classic, stop by La Principal (700 N. Main St., Evanston) for their Pozole Rojo, a red chile tomato broth with braised chicken, hominy, cilantro, cabbage, oregano, and radish.

CHILI MAKES YOU LESS CHILLY
Local takes on a great American favorite continue to reveal the flexible nature of a big bowl of chili. Comida Cantina (1928 Central St., Evanston) flaunts their authentic flavors of Mexican and Latin American cuisine in a Vegan Black Bean Chili with vegan chorizo. The Happ Inn Bar and Grill (305 Happ Rd., Northfield) nails the three “C’s” with casual, contemporary, comfort food mingling Turkey Chili with sour cream, onions, pasta, and cheddar. A cup of the zesty but not too spicy Homemade Chili from Valley Lodge Tavern (1141 Central Ave., Wilmette) will warm you up on a cold day without setting off five alarms in your mouth. One thing's for sure, you won't go hungry or be disappointed ordering this!

ITALY AND THE MEDITERRANEAN IN A BOWL
Maggiano’s Little Italy (Old Orchard Rd. & Skokie Blvd., Skokie) at Westfield Old Orchard scores with their quintessential Minestrone packed with vegetables, fresh basil, Romano, and Parmesan and their yummy marinara sauce. Avli (566 Chestnut St., Winnetka) will warm you up with their hearty, lemony Avgolemono soup, an egg-lemon soup with rice & chicken broth that will make your taste buds happy.
