Getting out the Vote - Election Ephemera from Evanston to the White House

Join us in exploring Evanston’s long history of political activism through this eclectic exhibition of campaign memorabilia. From local elections to presidential contests, the collection of the Evanston History Center contains a wide variety of materials associated with raising awareness and getting out the vote. Highlights of this exhibit include a lantern used in Abraham Lincoln’s 1864 presidential campaign, a scarf from Teddy Roosevelt’s 1912 Progressive Party presidential bid, and the first sample ballot after the passage of women suffrage in 1920. Also included are campaign buttons from Evanston’s local elections, Charles Dawes’ political career, and the jacket worn by Lorraine Morton, Evanston’s first African American mayor, first Democratic mayor and longest serving mayor, at her inauguration in 1993.
