Everything at Hewn (1733 Central St., Evanston) is made from scratch daily including the Seasonal Galette — a rustic French tart bursting with seasonal fruit, like, say baking apples — and the Apple Ginger Bundt Cake. Buck Russell's (1137 Greenleaf Ave., Wilmette) is not only your one-stop-shop for breakfast, lunch, custom cakes and ice cream; Dutch Apple or Pumpkin pies are made to order. Even if Bar Siena at Westfield Old Orchard (Old Orchard Rd. & Skokie Blvd., Skokie) encourages sharing, you might want to keep the Apple Brown Butter Crostata with spiced anglaise, caramel and vanilla gelato all to yourself.

Local coffee hangouts and beloved bakeries always get into the act this time of year. Glenview Grind (1837 Glenview Rd., Glenview) compliments their fresh-roasted coffee menu to channel a dessert mood with their Homemade Pumpkin Pie Latte. Small-batch, from-scratch Kneads & Wants Bakery (8042 Lincoln Ave., Skokie) calls their espresso star Pumpkin Spice Latte (the Honey Cinnamon Cold Brew would be fun to try, too). All three joints change up their baked goods offerings frequently, so best to keep stopping by to check for special tastes of the season.

Contemporary with a flair for comfort food, The Happ Inn (305 Happ Rd., Northfield) shows off with their Dutch Apple Pie tossing sliced Granny Smith apples in cinnamon sugar and lemon juice then topping all with a crispy crumble streusel and homemade sea salt caramel drizzle. Caramel continues the theme at Johnny's Kitchen & Tap (1740 Milwaukee Ave., Glenview) where their Apple Pie arrives warm with vanilla bean ice cream and caramel sauce. Pomeroy (844 Spruce St., Winnetka) is literally named for a loose French translation of The King's Apple, their gorgeous signature dessert with Brown Butter Financier and Calvados-infused caramel.
 

Saranello's, Wheeling

Fall Flavors in Every Course
The deceptively simple Kadu (Pumpkin) dish at Kabul House (2424 Dempster St., Evanston) enchants with cardamom, honey, garlic yogurt and mint. Get it as a Mazza (appetizer) or on the Vegetarian Platter with roasted eggplant, sauteed spinach and Afghan rice. Saranello's (601 N. Milwaukee Ave., Wheeling) applies their rustic Italian approach to the Apple Crostata, but you can feast on glazed apples with the Roasted Berkshire Pork Chop, too. European-styled Guildhall Restaurant (694 Vernon Ave., Glencoe) offers a delicious Fall Chopped Salad with kale, honey crisp apples, red bell peppers, celery, parsley, pumpkin seeds and a cinnamon shallot vinaigrette. In the mood for more greens? Try the Orchard Salad, a blend of mixed greens with green apple slices, walnuts, roasted tomatoes, Feta, multi-grain croutons and balsamic vinaigrette at Grill House (3061 Dundee Rd., Northbrook).

Ciders and Brews: The Apple of Your Eye
Temperance Beer (2000 Dempster St., Evanston) hatched a new line, Scarce Goods, where the craft beer enthusiasts (is lunatic too strong a term?) now make ridiculously small batches with compelling flavors. Only available at their brewery, these brews often rally fabulous seasonal fruits. From their taproom, Sketchbook Brewing Company (4901 W. Main St., Skokie) recommends Shacksbury The Vermonter, a gin-based botanical cider made by slowly fermenting apples and adding juniper berries.
