Summer events are heating up across the North Shore with carnival rides, live music, theatrical performances and art fairs. Pack a picnic or sample local fare at outdoor concerts and annual festivals. From country to klezmer and fireworks to farmers markets, fill up your calendar with acres of amusements. Fast becoming a monthly must-do, the Market appears the first Thursday of the month in the cheery heart of Evanston. A different theme pops up each time and features Evanston shops and makers with local entertainers creating a lively night out. August will showcase Food & Drink vendors as Chicago jazz vocalist Petra van Nuis adds ambiance. Put next month’s event in your calendar, too, for a focus on Paper, Books, Music and Fine Art (Sep. 2).

A summer tradition in downtown Northbrook for decades, this fest includes carnival rides, games, live music, food, beer/wine and much more! The fest grounds will rock to music by genre-spanning cover artists Off the Record (Aug. 4), Mr. Blotto (“Chicago’s Original Jam Band”) (Aug. 6) and The Van Halen Invasion (Aug. 7). The Grand Prize Raffle — which funds scholarships and community grants — could win you up to $10,000!

What’s better than free, fun family entertainment?! Bring your gang with folding chairs or a blanket to the Village Green for pop/rock band Serendipity (Aug. 4), then Kaleidoscope Dance Night — a night of dance and activities for the kids (Aug. 11). Billy Elton features pianist and vocalist Reid Spears leading an 8-piece band for songs by Billy Joel and Elton John (Aug. 18). The sixth annual Skokie Theatre: Skokie Idol Winners Concert shows off local talent on Aug. 25.

The summer highlight of the North Shore, Ravinia’s August shows are offering up superstars and perennial favorites like Judy Collins, Willie Nelson and Family, The Beach Boys, Counting Crows and Gladys Knight… just to namedrop a few. Recently rejuvenated, Ravinia’s Dining Pavilion features two seated restaurants and two locations for quick bites and bar service, as well as Ravinia Market with mini restaurants serving burgers, paninis, tacos, pizza and barbeque with mobile ordering option and QR codes.

Head back out to the Out Back of North Shore Center’s rear lot to hear the best of Chicago-based artists. BYO camp chairs with some tasty picnic fixings or enjoy onsite concessions. Maxwell Street Klezmer Band featuring vocalist Lisa Fishman brings a special performance with a full big band on Aug. 5. Chicago Philharmonic adds classic flavor on Aug. 6. Award-winning Porchlight Music Theatre’s Broadway in your Backyard includes video projections and an expanded band for their Aug. 7 show.

This concert series is out of this world. Out of Space — presented by SPACE — fills Canal Shores Golf Course with a rousing little summer festival. Shows take place on the beautiful, tree-lined first two holes of the course, so grab your picnic blankets or camp chairs for a night under stars. Get tickets in advance for EmmyLou Harris and Los Lobos (Aug. 5), Patti Smith and Her Band Aug. 6), Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals (Aug. 7) and Caamp (Aug. 8).

Whether you are an experienced collector or just looking for something special, explore painting, sculpture, and photography alongside unique, usable art, including handmade jewelry, one-of-a-kind furniture and home accessories. See the masters at work with live art demonstrations along with one-on-one booth chats. Free and open to the public.

Shanghai: Safe Haven During the Holocaust

A wonderful educational opportunity, this exhibition sheds light on a lesser-known moment in Holocaust history. As European Jews were shut out of country after country while trying to escape Nazi persecution, many found a beacon of hope in an unlikely place: Shanghai, China. In 1946, American photojournalist Arthur Rothstein began documenting the lives of Jewish refugees who now called Shanghai’s Hongkew District “home.” The exhibition is a tribute to human endurance, capturing both the enormous hardship and fierce perseverance of refugees and their families.

Gear up for this all-day event that sports gourmet food trucks, balloon artists, airport static display, live music and fireworks. In the morning, register for a 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk on the main runway and taxiways with an opportunity to experience the runway as airplane pilots do. The festivities continue well into the night when gates open at 5:00 pm for live music by Gone Country and The Lounge Puppets with a break at 9:15 for fireworks.

Skokie’s legendary street festival returns with live music from funk, soul and R&B legends The Ohio Players (Aug. 27), American rock band The Verve Pipe (Aug. 28) and fan favorites Tributosaurus becomes The Allman Brothers Band (Aug. 29). The bash boasts a large carnival midway, a 5K Run, a children's stage, kid's activities, classic films, an auto show, bingo, a resource fair, exhibits at the Skokie Heritage Museum, a Sunday pancake breakfast, farmers market and yet…more!
