Hal Foster: Father of the Super Hero & Adventure Comics Through July 22

This incredible exhibit offers the public an inside look at the genius of artist Hal Foster, the man who started the whole tidal wave of adventure comics by drawing the first Tarzan strips during the 1930s. Considered one of the greatest illustrators of the twentieth century, Hal Foster's work influenced many others including the creator of Superman and Flash Gordon! In addition to Tarzan, Foster also created Prince Valiant, an adventure comic familiar to many throughout the world, but virtually unknown in the Chicago area. Created by Skokie resident, Sid Weiskirch, this "must-see" exhibit is on display at the Skokie Public Library through July 22. Throughout downtown Evanston
Big-time cycling is coming to Evanston on Sunday, July 22 as the city welcomes one of the country's largest multi-category cycling events ever! Major streets will be blocked off as the excitement of international bike racing comes to Chicago's North Shore. Sponsored by Evanston Northwestern Health Care, the Chicago leg of the 17 day-long Point Premium Root Beer International Cycling Classic (which runs from July 13-29 and is in its 38th year), will have cyclists riding a .9 mile circuit starting on Sherman at Davis Street. Spectators are invited to enjoy the local shops and restaurants along the race course, as well as a live concert by Dave Weld and The Imperial Flames, which follows immediately after the final race of the day. In 1997, Art began a 10 year-long position as personal chef to Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham, and currently acts as the specialty chef for Ms. Winfrey's most talked-about events. This much anticipated annual event features realistic Civil War battle reenactments with Union and Confederate camps and Blue vs. Gray skirmishes (complete with authentic Civil War clothing and uniforms!) Those who attend Glenview's Civil War Living History Days will also have an opportunity to visit a field hosptial, enjoy refreshments in the camp kitchen, and shop for Civil War memorabilia.
