Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream
February 28 - March 2
Cahn Auditorium
600 Emerson Street, Evanston
Benjamin Britten's 1959 opera A Midsummer Night's Dream retells Shakespeare's classic story of requited and unrequited love and the hilarity that ensues when the hobgoblin Puck meddles with the mortal and fairy realms. To differentiate the two worlds, Britten uses the bright sounds of harps, keyboards, and percussion for the fairies, and warm strings and winds for the mortal lovers. The richly dreamlike atmosphere makes this one of the most successful of all operatic adaptations of Shakespeare. This show, which is presented by the Northwestern University School of Music's Voice and Opera Program, is performed in English with English supertitles. Through April 6, 2008
Mary & Leigh Block Museum of Art
40 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston
This groundbreaking new exhibition examines the intersection of digital technology and the graphic arts. Imaging by Numbers surveys the use of computers in printmaking and drawing through approximately 60 works created by nearly 40 North American and European artists from the 1950s to the present. The exhibition focuses on artists who wrote their own computer code or collaborated with computer engineers. Beginning with photographs of electronic waveforms by Ben Laposky and Herbert Franke, Imaging by Numbers includes drawings made with plotter printers by the likes of Manfred Mohr and Edward Zajec, explorations of virtual worlds composed with 3-D imaging software by David Em, and works created with inventive modifications and combinations of traditional and digital printing techniques. Contemporary artists writing their own computer programs or altering existing software are also represented. For more information, please call 847-467-4602 or visit www.blockmuseum.northwestern.edu

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Carousel”Abt Goes "Green"
Retail Giant Opens Own Recycling Center
1200 N. Milwaukee Avenue, Glenview
Glenview's Abt Electronics is going green. A recycling center has been built behind the Glenview store and is now accepting old appliances, electronics and packing material from the public, as well as "castoffs" that Abt crews collect when they deliver new appliances. According to store president Mike Abt, the center is the latest of the store's environmentally-friendly practices, with more initiatives planned in the next few months. He is hoping that the public brings unwanted televisions, computers and appliances to the store so they can be recycled properly. Also recycled at the center are the packing materials in which appliances are shipped. To learn more, please call 847-967-8830 or visit www.abtelectronics.com.
