Best Things to Do on Chicago’s North Shore This December

In December, many of us are focused on finding those perfect gifts and taking advantage of everything this season has to offer. However, if you’re looking for ways to entertain the kiddos on those cold winter days, need to plan a perfect date night, or just want to pretend summer is closer than it is, there are plenty of things to do this month on Chicago’s North Shore. So read on and start planning how you’ll make the year’s last month your best month.



Dec. 7: Warm Bevvy Walk

Various Locations, Evanston

Complete your holiday shopping while also sipping on delicious drinks during this annual Evanston event. Many shops and restaurants throughout Downtown Evanston and the Main-Dempster Mile, including Ayla’s Originals, Bookends & Beginnings, NaKorn, and Whiskey Thief, will offer discounts and promotions (along with a variety of beverages), and #WeLoveEvanston mugs will be available to purchase for a $5 donation. This event is free, but event organizers ask that you RSVP.

Dec. 15: Get “Unfrozen” at Arctic Splash

Arctic Splash, Wheeling

Dreaming of those hot summer days spent lounging beside the pool? Well, the weather outside might be frightful, but you can still enjoy a day at the pool, plus games and crafts, at Arctic Splash in Wheeling. Petie the Polar Bear will also stop by for a visit.

Dec. 16: Star Wars Skating with Santa

Old Orchard Mall, Skokie

Dust off your Star Wars costumes and ice skates for Star Wars Skating with Santa at the Westfield Old Orchard Ice Rink. Your kids can practice their twirls, crossovers and jumps during their 30-minute session on the ice with Santa. Skate rentals are included with the ticket price. Come early or stay after for free crafts and photos with Santa!

Dec. 17: Hanukkah Concert 

Chicago Botanic Garden, Glencoe

Chicago Botanic Garden’s annual Hanukkah Concert will feature music by the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band. Tickets include a visit to Wonderland Express as well as the concert, and you can save by purchasing in advance.

Through Dec. 17: “The Book of Will”

Northlight Theatre, Skokie

If you’re a fan of William Shakespeare, you won’t want to miss this play at Northlight Theatre about the two actors who made sure the world would always remember The Bard’s works by creating the First Folio in 1623.

Through Dec. 21: 2017 Winter Arts & Crafts Expo

Evanston Art Center, Evanston 

This Evanston Art Center expo, now in its 15th year, features original arts and crafts from more than 140 artisans. General shopping takes place through Dec. 21, but don’t miss special events like Sip n’ Shop on Dec. 7 and Men’s Shopping Day on Dec. 16. Plus, the EAC Student Expo will feature works by the Art Center’s own artists.

Begins Dec. 22: Winter Carnival

Glenview Ice Center, Glenview

Glenview Ice Center’s 17th annual Winter Carnival will pack so much fun into two weeks that your kids will never be bored. On Freezin’ Fridays, drop kiddos off for broomball, ice skating, crafts, and more. On Dec. 28, watch the Glenview Ice Center staff and coaches take on the Glenview Police and Fire Departments in the Charity Hockey Game. You can even skate with your favorite superheroes, Tommy Hawk from the Chicago Blackhawks, and Skates from the Chicago Wolves. Find a complete schedule and list of events online.

Begins Dec. 26: Illinois Holocaust Museum’s Winter Break at the Museum

Illinois Holocaust Museum, Skokie

Make the most of those days off with a visit to the Illinois Holocaust Museum. Through Jan. 7, kids and students can visit for free with one paid adult. Explore the new Take a Stand Center and the Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution exhibit, which closes Jan. 7.
