Itineraries - North Shore Stained Glass Sparkle
Stained glass is the focus of the day. Evanston's history and culture is enriched by the art and architecture of the community. See the contributions of the past and meet the professional craftsmen of today. Drive through the neighborhoods to appreciate the landmark homes and buildings. Choose from the following.

STAINED GLASS WORKSHOP

Watch craftsmen at their trade creating and designing large-scale glass works of art. See the various techniques and types of materials needed for different projects.

LEVERE MEMORIAL TEMPLE

The traditional windows were designed by noted artist Louis Comfort Tiffany. His technique offered an enormous range of color. The Peace Window symbolizes the healing of the nation after the Civil War. Other historical events are depicted in the many additional windows.

ALICE MILLAR CHAPEL

The chapel windows date from 1964. Belgian born and trained architectural glass artist Benoit Gilsoul created the abstract designs. They combine the Biblical story and life today. The stained and painted glass is constantly affected by the changing light of the day.

DESIGNER JEWELRY SHOP

Art that can be worn has always had a wide appeal. See the creative work of jewelers. The owner of the shop will explain her particular style and how she fashions her handcrafted work.

CHARLES GATES DAWES MANSION

The present Evanston Historical Society occupies this elegant 30 room French Normandy estate on Lake Michigan. Furnished by former Vice-President Dawes and his family, it is a perfect example of living history. Our tour includes a film on the history of Evanston.

TEN THOUSAND VILLAGES

An import shop filled with artisan-made gifts, apparel, household items, and jewelry from around the world. Hear how these treasures are acquired, then browse through the bazaar-like setting.
