Registration Now Underway!

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, the Illinois Bureau of Tourism and Visit Illinois are gearing up to host the 21st Annual Illinois Governor's Conference at the Hilton Springfield. This year's conference is themed Making News, and features top-tier, industry-renowned speakers and experts who will focus on looking ahead at unique industry trends, new media technology, how to market to growing travel segments and more. Attendees will have many opportunities to network and make valuable new contacts including various receptions and an extensive tradeshow featuring products and services related to the tourism industry. New this year, a special half-day pre-conference workshop will take place entitled Heritage Development and its Impact on Tourism. The Northbrook Park District is hosting a fabulous Winter Carnival to celebrate the season with hay rides, ice sculptures, games, prizes, art activities and a chili cook-off. Set up for the chili cook-off begins at 12:30 pm. The judging takes place at 1 pm, followed by a public tasting and prizes for first, second and third place. The Performance Lab of Piven has collaborated with the Storybox Ensemble to present STORYBOX, a 90-minute, one-act improv production for adult audiences. Using only wooden sticks, colored pieces of cloth, and a single audience suggestion, this highly talented ensemble of theatre artists builds an original story in front of your eyes. Utilizing movement, scene-work, and transformations to create the arc of the story, they develop characters, themes, and scene structure into a performance that brings the audience along on the main character's personal journey. STORYBOX has been in existence for the past four years, has performed over 150 times to more than 25,000 audience members, and features a diverse ensemble of actors and musicians. The Chicago Botanic Garden, in collaboration with Horticulture magazine, presents a garden design symposium called Down to Earth Gardening. Nan Sinton, Horticulture's director of programs, will lead the day's activities and introduce the speakers who will talk about gardening smarter, problem solving and going green with the best new plants. They will also share their expertise regarding various plants and design, while offering gardening tips and secrets for success. Cost to attend is $129, which includes lunch.
